Commencement 2025 — Valedictorian in Life Sciences

“Embrace uncertainty — take risks, explore new paths and you may find your calling. Regret only comes from chances not taken.”

Jeriel Lee (SPS Batch 21)

Year 4 student Jeriel Lee graduates this year with Honours (High Distinction) in Life Sciences, specialising in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and with a Minor in Forensic Science. His time at NUS has been defined by a deep commitment to research and a passion for discovery that spans multiple disciplines.

Jeriel’s journey began in Year 1, when he joined the Special Programme in Science (SPS). Immersed in this vibrant community, he honed his research curiosity and critical thinking skills. That same year, he also took on a summer internship with the NUS Medicinal Plants Research Group, an experience that sparked his interest in applying science to address pressing biological and medical challenges.

In Year 2, he embarked on his SPS SP3172 project under the Wacker Research Group, where he explored the field of nanomedicine. His work investigated how polymer nanoparticles interact with red blood cells to improve drug delivery to the brain, involving both nanoparticle synthesis and in-vitro studies. That same year, Jeriel was also selected for the prestigious NUS Amgen Scholars Program under the Monteiro Lab, where he pursued butterfly research and developed his interest in ecology and evolutionary biology.

Building on this foundation, Jeriel undertook an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme in Science (UROPS) in Year 3, followed by his Final Year Project under the Monteiro Lab. These experiences allowed him to deepen his expertise in evolutionary processes and species interactions, strengthening his passion for life sciences research.

Beyond his academic and research accomplishments, Jeriel also embodied the spirit of mentorship. After completing the Special Programme in Science (SPS), he continued to serve as a senior mentor, guiding juniors through their academic journeys and generously sharing his insights. His leadership and dedication reflect not only his personal growth but also his commitment to building a supportive scientific community.

Jeriel’s journey through NUS demonstrates the power of curiosity, perseverance, and collaboration. His achievements as valedictorian are a testament to both his academic excellence and his spirit of service. We warmly congratulate Jeriel on this well-deserved honour and look forward to the impact he will continue to make in science and beyond.
