Cultivating Global Connections: NCU × NUS Science Exchange

Four students from National Central University visited NUS for an interdisciplinary science exchange on 11 May 2026. They kicked off their Singapore adventure bright and early at 5am. Their first stop was the iconic Fort Canning Park, where they visited the famous tree tunnel and snapped a memorable group photo to mark the start of their trip.

After exploring Fort Canning, they headed to National University of Singapore, where they were warmly hosted by four SPS students. Over conversations and lunch, the students exchanged stories about university life in Taiwan and Singapore, discovering both surprising similarities and interesting cultural differences in academics, campus culture, and student experiences.

Reflecting on their experience, all students found that despite the language and cultural differences, they shared the same struggles with academics and research and bonded over their shared love for science.

In the afternoon, the visitors were introduced to the beloved “新加坡桥牌” (Singaporean Bridge) — a uniquely Singaporean pastime that quickly became a fun and engaging bonding activity. The group then attended a special sharing session by Alex Hue from Centre for Quantum Technologies, who gave an accessible crash course on quantum computing. The session covered how quantum computers work, the current progress of quantum hardware research in Singapore, and even featured a hands-on look at a real superconducting qubit chip that was passed around among the students. After which, the students visited Prof Sow’s nanoscience lab for an introduction to nanomaterials.

To wrap up their visit to NUS, the students and their professors joined the SPS Dean’s Tea session, ending the day with meaningful conversations, new friendships, and unforgettable memories from their time in Singapore.
