Other small mammals that can be found
in Singapore & some others....

Many other small mammals are now being kept as pets in many parts of the world. Some are labelled as "exotics" and are recent additions to the pet trade and are not well known. I don't pretend to like the idea of the sale of "exotics" as pets - some animals are just better left in the wild. This is more infomation for those of you who do have other small mammals besides the more usual guinea pigs, hamsters or rabbits. In Singapore, we can now find sugar gliders, ferrets, chinchillas, hedgehogs and others. Most of these pets are also very expensive here, going into the thousands of dollars.

There are regulations in keeping some of them and this is only right. Chinchillas are endangered in the wild and each one being sold as a pet must be certified captive bred - this will discourage poaching - don't support the illegal pet trade!! One should be aware of conservation issues - for every animal being smuggled or imported here, many die along the way.

Primates...
This is a squirrel monkey
Keeping primates isn't always what it seems. Yes, they are cute and highly intelligent but they are usually not ideal pets. Primates also have diseases that humans can carry as well. These are animals not to be taken lightly. There have been reports of people keeping gibbons and other primates like tarsiers but here again, please do not be a supporter of the illegal pet trade. These animals are sometimes taken from the wild where populations are already dwindling. Some are endangered in the wild.

I studied the squirrel monkey in the zoo and can describe this animal as being mischevious and highly active. They are indeed adorable.
