Introduction
Guinea pigs?
Guinea pigs are also rodents and although sometimes mistakenly called hamsters, can grow much bigger than their rodent cousins. Guinea pigs are famous for the little squeaking sounds they make to beg their human owners for food. You can easily hear this at our local zoo when the keepers come out to feed the guinea pigs. They can usually recognise their owners or the people who normally feed them and will call only when he/she is near. Guinea pigs are especially unique among rodents in that they give birth to fully formed and fully-furred young able to take solid food.

Behaviour
Guinea pigs are social animals and live in large groups in the wild. Not normally aggressive, they have been reputed to make very timid pets (of course, this is just an opinion of some). Guinea pigs do not usually dig their own burrows but use those made by other animals. They come above ground in search for food. Guinea pigs were originally from South America but have now been imported to many countrues around the world. They have often been said by owners to enjoy two things most of all: sleeping and eating!

The guinea pig fancy

Guinea pigs are also being bred for shows, especially in the States and England. They are judged with a number of criteria and breed standards can usually be obtained from the clubs. There is no guinea pig club here in Singapore but there are guinea pig ethusiasts who keep and breed large numbers of them.
