Aarhus Impression
Most of the time in January, the sky outside the window was gray and the city was covered by mizzle. I started to get use of this not so romantic winter and the strong wind in front of the bike shed of my college. It is this kind of wet, cool climate that Danes blame when people mention their reputation to foreign visitors as distant, somber, and even cold. People said Danes keep to themselves. ¡°We cannot have much social life in the pavements outside the houses in this kind of weather.¡± They would explain. In the other hand, Danes would like to have their house comfortable and cozy ¨C a reason to stay at home. As time goes by, I found Danes were very friendly and genuine. And I gradually tasted the special flavor of this European town.
Aarhus, or Århus, is Denmark's second-largest city, with a population of about 280,000 (Singapore is 15 times of the population of Aarhus, and 1.5 times of the area of Aarhus), and likes to be known as ¡°the world¡¯s smallest big city¡±. From geographic view, Aarhus is at the centre of Nordic countries. It is the commercial centre of Jutland, and also Denmark¡¯s liveliest ¡°College town¡± - a cultural magnet known for its music, theatre, art and cafes, its annual Festival Week in the autumn and its nearby forests, beaches and castles. |
