Hello!

Welcome to my homepage

I just graduated with Honours in Animal Biology from the National University of Singapore, and am currently working as an research assistant in the Reef Ecology Lab in NUS. Research work is time consuming, even though I love the uncertainty of it all. Still, in an effort to be as `well-rounded' as possible, I try to have as many activities as I can. Some of my favourite activities are listed below and you can click on them to find out more.

Academic Interests

My major is Zoology with special interest in conservation. Currently, I’m working on artificial reefs and their application in turbid waters. We are experimenting with new materials for artificial reef units and doing some coral ‘farming’. I also did some investigations on the effect of sedimentation on the photophysiology of Fungia scabra for my honours thesis. I’ll be happy to discuss these and related topics with anyone who is interested.  Naturally I have to dive pretty often for my data collection, so I am also always on the lookout for dive buddies. Anyone for a free (albeit working) dive?

Hobbies

I live to travel, and enjoy trekking around the region. Do visit my travel webpage for travel tips and info about the places I've been, and I would love to include any of your contributions.

Another activity I'm extremely into is aikido, a peaceful non-violent Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba.

Otherwise, I collect stamps, particularly British mint stamps and first day covers.

I especially like poetry, whether English or German, and though I find my own works not worthy of being put on a webpage, I would like to share some of my fav poems with you.

A sport I've just picked up - canoe-polo! It's very much like water-polo on kayaks and I used to play for Changi Sea Sports Club. The great thing about canoe-polo is that it combines the physicality of terrestrial contact sports like basketball with the relative safety of being ensconced by a fibreglass kayak and the low impact water surface (as compared to concrete ground).

Mad about biking

Aptly sums up my feeling on this wonderful sport (yeah!). I do both road and off-road biking, and this is my beloved road bike.

Any interesting tips and activities are much welcome. J

My cats

Here is a pic of my runaway kitty, name is Teh Halia (ginger tea). He has been missing since February 18 2001. Blind in the left eye and about 6 months old when he disappeared. If anyone has seen him, please let me know.  Last seen around the Pasir Ris area.

 Where are you?

Since then, we have a new addition to the family, whose final name is Mao Mao, because she only responds to that (that's 'cat cat' in Mandarin for you). Her birthday is 14 January 2001, and her current hobbies seem to be sleeping, meowing for food and napping. Pictures posted here.

A cat can change your life and brighten your day J. I love to cuddle my cat when I get home from work and to see them snuffle about the house. Does wonders for my mood.
